Education and Training
People who teach information literacy should have the necessary expertise as well as pedagogical knowledge. This knowledge may be acquired through a university course in information science or through targeted training courses, one path not precluding the other.
Various universities in Switzerland offer degree programmes in information science and training opportunities in information literacy.
The HTW Chur and the Haute école de gestion de Genève (HEG) offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in information science. People with an apprenticeship in information and documentation, and university entrance qualification may enter the bachelor’s course. People from other professional and study fields may be accepted into the course during a years’ internship.
The University of Berne und die University of Zurich offer continuing education courses in information science. The emphasis in Berne is more on archival science and in Zurich the emphasis is more on library science.
The desired skills and abilities for people who provide information literacy in tertiary education are described in the following documents:
Project "Information Literacy at Swiss Universities" (2011). Requirements for teaching information literacy. Zurich.
English, German, French, Italian
Project "Information Literacy at Swiss Universities" (2011). Recommendations for library and information science university education. Zurich.
University of Zurich
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Zurich, in cooperation with the Zurich Central Library, offers a MAS Library and Information Science continuing education program. Various majors can be occupied or, if space is available, only individual modules can be visited.
Degree:
- Master of Advanced Studies (MAS: 60 ECTS)
- Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS: 34 ECTS)
- Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS: from 10 ECTS)
- Confirmation of participation for individual models
The MAS program is run alongside employment. It is expected that the necessary practice should have been acquired during the completion of an R+D course. After completion of the MAD degree program, graduates are qualified to exercise technical and leadership roles in R+D institutions or to pursue their own research projects.
The study program is divided into four basic and seven advanced modules. The advanced module for Information Literacy includes 36 lectures and has a 4 ECTS rating.
The course is conducted every two years (starting in odd years). The course is open to all with a university degree (licentiate or master) and an activity of at least 50% in a library or other "Information & Documentation" institution.
University of Bern
The University of Bern, in collaboration with the University of Lausanne, offers a part-time postgraduate course in archives, library and information science. The postgraduate course can be completed after two years with a Master of Advanced Studies in Archival, Library and Information Science (MAS ALIS) or, after attending the basic course, with a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Archival, Library and Information Science (CAS ALIS).
Degree:
- Master of Advanced Studies in Archival, Library and Information Science
- Certificate of Advanced Studies in Archival, Library and Information Science
It is an advantage if the necessary practice can be obtained during the postgraduate course in an "Information & Documentation" institution. During the course it is mandatory to complete an internship, with a rating of 2 ECTS. Graduates of the course will qualify for this study with a higher function in an "Information & Documentation" institution or company.
The study course is divided into one basic and two advanced stages. The basic level can be completed with a CAS.
The course is conducted every two years (beginning in even years). The training program is aimed at people with a university degree (Masters or equivalent title).
The University of Bern, as from 2012, offers a new training course with two supplementary modules on current topics which will run independently of the MAS/CAS course. The supplementary modules can be visited with a university degree and sufficient practical experience. Notably, in module 2 aspects of information literacy are discussed.
